An
archipelago of 36 small islands in the Arabian
Sea, about 300 kms away from Kerala with pure
white beaches and magnificent shady lagoons.
The atolls are made from a kaleidoscope of
corals, even black coral. Underwater is a
whole other picture gallery of startling colours
and perhaps the most amazing fish life in
the world. Hawkbill turtles abound and if
you come at the right time of the year, you
may see them bustling towards the sand at
night to lay their eggs.
Eleven islands are inhabited and there are
strict rules regarding which island foreigners
may visit in order to protect the local way
of life. Bangaram is uninhabited except for
a magnificent resort which goes way beyond
the normal description. Here there is no artificial
swimming pool but a crystal clear lagoon instead.
A dining hut on the beach offers a massive
buffet style gourmet's delight. Hammocks from
the palm trees are your sofa. Scuba diving,
snorkeling, fishing and boat trips.

This
string of over 300 richly forested tropical islands
in the Bay of Bengal lies between India and Myanmar
(Burma) and stretches almost to the tip of Sumatra.
Ethnically the islands are not part of India and until
fairly recently, they were inhabited only by indigenous
tribal people. Now tourists are welcome in certain areas.
Enjoy leisurely walks on quaint narrow roads, white
sand beaches, rainforest and tropical trees, mangrove
swamps. These islands are a nature lover's dream with
spectacular bird watching (over 200 species documented)
and unusual wildlife.

Marco
Polo said it was the greatest island in the world.
You may well agree. Try the white sandy beaches south
of the capital, Colombo, or head for the traditional
architecture of lesser-known cities or a guided tour
of the countryside green with tea plantations. The
island has a spectacular amount of colourful pageants
throughout the year. Elephant races, coconut games,
full moon festivals celebrating the birth of Buddha,
drummers, dancers - the island is alive with celebration
of it's own tradition all the year round. And it's
not much more than a stone's throw from Kerala.
